Stemming from the land that surrounds me, my paintings develop from place and grow into strange, spiritual, often surreal places.
I am looking for ritualistic spots where there could be a connection made. Hiding, interacting, laying.
Post- industrial, historical and abandoned landscapes are all possibilities.
Most recently my paintings have been inspired by Kennal Vale, an old Gunpowder mill as well as Bissoe which has mining history and post industrial structures.
It’s about being at one and allowing myself and whoever I share the experience with to investigate and discover the space deeply.
Whilst on location I take photos and collect moss. The photography is used like a filmic sketch.
Within my paintings I'm looking for a feeling that sits on a knife's edge. A strangeness, and a darkness that is met with peace and connection. This is created by a process of adding and taking away layers of oil to paper. Layers of translucency that meet velvety opacity.
