ISLAND
ENYS: ENSOW (PLURAL), MEANING ISLAND
ON THE 14TH JUNE 2019, I OPENED THE NON-PROFIT EXHIBITION 'ISLAND' ALONGSIDE LILLIAN THOMSON AND ELEANOR LEE. THE EXHIBITION SHOWCASED 20 EARLY CAREER ARTISTS FROM ACROSS THE UK INLCUDING OUR OWN WORK. WE DECIDED TO CREATE AN OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE A GROUP OF ARTISTS AN EXHIBITION WHICH WAS FOCUSED ON BUILDING NEW NETWORKS, TALKING AND CURATING TOGETHER ASWELL AS BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE PUBLIC, OTHER CREATIVE PROFESSIONALS AND GALLERIES.
AS CUARTORS WE WERE INTERESTED IN THE HISTORY OF ENYS HOUSE, PARTICULARLY THE ACHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE AND HOW WE COULD FOCUS ON DIFFERENT ELEMENTS TO CURATE AND INFORM THE ARTISTS WHO WERE INVOLVED.
LOOKING BACK AT THE CURATION OF THE SHOW IM REALLY INTERESTED IN PUSHING THIS FURTHER NEXT TIME. SPENDING EVEN MORE TIME UNDERSTANDING THE DYNAMICS OF THE LOCATION.
BEYOND THE EXHIBITION, I HAVE BEGUN THINKING ABOUT PLACES AND LANDSCAPES THAT ARE LEFT BEHIND AND HOW THIS INFORMS MY PAINTINGS. THE THEME OF SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY TENDS TO RUN THROUGH MY WORK AND OFTEN BRINGS GROUPS OF MY PAINTINGS TOGETHER. THE EXHIBITION HAS HELPED ME TO IDENTIFY THIS KEY MOTIF IN MY IMAGERY. THE HISTORY OF FIGURES, LANDSCAPES AND OBJECTS OFTEN TAKE FORM IN MY PAINTINGS BECOMING SLIGHTLY DISTORTED IN THE PROCESS.
